Feminist Law reformations and social changes ....Overlooked and Not Relevant

Within the past few weeks , i have been learning more about how systemically sexual violence is still a challenging issue to address criminally and socially when it is an act that is considered illegal under the law and that is an adverse behavior done to any individual. It is very disappointing to know that such a universal and infinite issue that affects many people whether if they are women or children , men , transgender is still in need of social and law reformation especially in western societies that claim equality of protection and opportunity and justice under the law for "all". Although, there has been some improvements in legislation about how to dress sexual violence, there are still some loopholes and discrepancies on how best to handle this issue especially to vulnerable persons and victims. Often most do not get justice for what has happened to them and do not get the support they need from not only our institutions but social services. Sexual violence is a social gendered issue and yet now it has become individualized and people who are victims of this act are encouraged to deal  with it internally. It's often viewed as a "women issue" and that is not of priority because we are made to believe that presently women have equal opportunity and protections under the law and that there are policies that address those concerns.

In Lise Gotell's article , she discusses how feminist movements have been pressuring for sexual assault laws to be reformed because it is a social and political issue that continues to affect society at large. However , due to the neoliberal shift in governance , this issue has been tossed to the side and is not seen as a systemic and social problem that needs to be incorporated into public policy but to establish it as a social service and as an individual it is the person's responsibility to reach for those services. How can sexual violence be seen as an person by person case/issue , when it is an issue that affects families, communities and affects a person's agency? Why is victim blaming so common when it is brought forward? It is as if stating sexual violence is still a societal problem chatters and contradicts the way our society is shaped to believe that it is not an alarming concern that needs to be acknowledged within our educational , governmental and health and social systems that are provided for the public because as Gotell said it is become "depoliticized" and excluded to be a societal concern. I may have the privilege to get educated on this issue and may have the privilege to know what my rights are and what services i have access to , i have the individual freedom  to deal with this issue on my own terms. And yet... i don't have the right to my own sexual autonomy and protection to be relevant enough not to be potentially ostracized socially and addressed in the very system that controls my environment?  To individualize sexual violence creates more issues in concern to victim blaming , less people coming forward and mental and social issues , further socio-economic inequalities for vulnerable people to get justice in the eyes of the law. If that does not constitute as alarming social and political problems , where do the issues lie?
